History

When I first saw the Siamese breed I was taken by their grace and exotic beauty. A childhood friend had a pair of Siamese cats and they were my first introduction to the breed. I grew up around these cats and enjoyed countless childhood hours in their company. Through them, I gained a real appreciation for the intelligence and sense of fun that are characteristic of all the oriental breeds. The Balinese, the Oriental Short Hair and the Oriental Long Hair all share those same endearing purrsonality traits of the Siamese. They all make lively, inter-active pets. I have had the good fortune to share my life with more than a few special cats over the years, but have yet to meet another breed yet that has stolen my heart so completely as the Orientals.

I started my cattery in 1982, with the goal of breeding, healthy, top quality kittens as well as to help improve, advance and preserve the genetics of the oriental breeds. My foundation stock were Balinese, the long haired version of the Siamese and Darlington cattery produced many grand champion and regional award winning Bali's during the mid to late 1980's. Darlington's Ding-a-Lynx was TICA's 12th best Canadian kitten in 1985, as well as having achieved supreme grand champion status. Her genes are well represented in all the pedigrees we are working with today. Dinger and a few other, more notable cats from the past have their own pages, be sure to visit, get to know them and check out their pedigrees.

While showing Balinese in TICA in the mid 1980's I was introduced to the Oriental Short Hair breed and quickly become enamored of the them. The flashy colors, combined with the potential variety of patterns and their sparkling emerald eyes were most appealing to me. They were true 'designer' Siamese, wild, sleek and very exotic looking like tiny tigers, but with the loving purrsonality and devotion of the Siamese and Balinese. I had been working with lynx point Balinese up to then and these tabby Orientals had a magnificent wild look to them that was just not possible in pointed cats. I envisioned a long haired version of these tabby orientals and immediately began work towards creating and campaigning championship status the Oriental Longhairs. I used my best Balinese stock and out-crossed to one of the best Orientals in Canada at the time, producing a litter of 6 solid colored, male kittens. One of these kittens, Gr.Ch. Darlington's Better Mousetrap went on to be the foundation stud for my Oriental breeding program.

TICA accepted the oriental long hair breed for championship status in 1987, followed several years later by the CFA. Today they enjoy full recognition in cat registries around the world and are available in a multitude of colors and patterns. The longer, silky Balinese coat provides a shimmering canvas for the Oriental colors and they appear softer and somewhat more muted than on the shorts. At Darlington cattery, we have concentrated on the dilute colors of chocolate, lavender/ frost and cinnamon, mostly in tabby and lynx points. We do get occasional solid colored cats as well as solid point colors, but the majority of our kittens are tabby. Most of our tabbies are spotted, but we are now working with ticked tabbies and are looking forward to the first litter out of our chocolate ticked tabby girl, Darlington's Golden Nugget.

Nugget is a very warm toned chocolate and I suspect that she is a cinnamon carrier, as well as being a long hair carrier. She will be bred in the fall 2006 and should have a nice variety of dilute colored kittens. Also planned is a fall 2006 breeding for Darlington's Jinga-Lynx, our seal lynx point Siamese girl. Both Jingle and Nugget are long hair carriers so it is possible they could have long haired kittens. We expect mostly siamese and oriental short hairs, but you never know!
